The best cryptocurrencies have strong communities. To measure that, I’ve started taking snapshots of each coin’s social media presence. I’m dubbing it a coin’s “social strength.” The stronger the community is around a coin, the higher it ranks on my list of the best cryptocurrencies.

The table below looks at each altcoin’s total number of Reddit readers, Twitter followers, Facebook likes, Twitter mentions over the past 30 days, and Topsy sentiment score (with anything north of 50 being positive, anything less than 50 negative, and 50 itself being neutral).

In future months, I’ll include a ranking change so we can see which of the best cryptocurrencies are falling out of favor, and which are moving up on the list. A few takeaways from this list:

1. Bitcoin is the top coin overall and the top coin on Reddit (though it’s in second place on Twitter and Facebook).
2. Bitcoin had more than 8 times as many mentions on Twitter over the past 30 days than any other coin (and it had more Twitter mentions than every other altcoin combined).
3. Dogecoin is the leading altcoin on Facebook and Twitter. Dogecoin also has the highest Topsy Sentiment rating at the moment.
4. More people follow altcoins on Reddit than they do on Facebook (269,311 vs. 263,570).
5. The average number of Twitter followers for an altcoin is 2,201.
6. The average number of Reddit readers for an altcoin is 1,235.
7. The average number of Facebook likes for an altcoin is 1,209.
